Romeo and Juliet

Initial Thoughts

So far I have read through the first act of the very infamous play, Romeo and Juliet.  Before I continue reading any farther I want to document my initial feelings on certain characters, the overall plot, and how it's written to see how my opinions change by the end of the book. In the first act of the play you don't get introduced to too many characters besides the main ones, like Romeo and Juliet. Romeo is the one who takes most of the attention for this first act, as Juliet only gets introduced towards the end and does not have many lines. Though she didn't say a lot, from what I have seen of her I really like Juliet. She seems to have a nice personality that can come off as naive, but in my opinion I think that she is just smarter than the people around her and values her own opinions more. So, based on the first act, Juliet is my favorite character because of the way that she sticks to her own morals, such as not wanting to get married when her parents want her to. On the contrary, Romeo is probably one of my least favorite characters as of now. He just seems like he is a very whiny boy who is depressed because of a girl who does not love him back. The feelings that he feels are always very big because he could jump from being love-sick over Rosaline one minute, to then seeing Juliet at the Capulet's party and instantly falling in love and forgetting about Rosaline. This is a little toxic of him, but as we know this was written in a different age. Another one of my least favorite characters is the nurse. She just likes to go on long, and almost always, unwanted tangents that truthfully serve little to no purpose. I think that the way the plot is developing is good and is not moving too fast or too slow. I am very interested in seeing what happens next and how the characters evolve, especially Romeo. The old English language that it is written in is not as bad as I thought it would be going into the book, but it is still a little confusing, especially when reading it aloud. Overall, I am really liking the story so far.
