Initial Thoughts
Recently, I started reading the classic To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I have read through the first part of the book, so I have enough to start my initial opinions on it. Reading a classic like this is mostly how I expected it to be, thus far. It was really hard to start reading the book because the whole first part/half of it seems to just be backstory that is not completely relevant to the story as a whole. Also, the way that it started was hard to get into because it started with one of the main characters, Jem, breaking his arm and the story behind it. As I have read through the first half of the book this little anecdote at the beginning still has yet to have any significance. Getting into the book was also hard because of the way that none of the characters are really introduced, they just all get thrown into it. This was really confusing because for the first bit of reading I had no clue who the main character even was really, so that made it hard to connect with the book initially. After I got past the first part where it was mostly a boring backstory, my opinion on the book has changed a little bit. I started to read this book because the story of the trial seemed interesting, so when I began reading and it wasn't about the trial at all it was a little disappointing and made me want to stop reading. But, after the first fifteen chapters we finally start to see what the trial is about and then transition into being in the courthouse with them as it begins. Getting to this point in the book was really difficult for me, but I am happy that I got to where I am because now I am finally starting to enjoy reading it. The characters are still not the most interesting to me, but now since the plot has begun to develop I am excited to keep reading and to see where the book goes. As of now, I have no real prediction of what will happen next, but I am finally intrigued.
